CLEAN AGENT FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

FM 200, NOVEC 1230 / ANSUL (HFC-227EA) CLEAN AGENT FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

Traditional water-based sprinklers are effective at suppressing fires, but they can cause severe damage to sensitive electronics, critical records and high-value equipment. If your operations depend on these assets, water may solve one problem while creating another.

Clean agent fire suppression systems offer a smarter alternative. Advanced agents such as NOVEC™ 1230 and ANSUL FM-200™ (HFC-227ea) suppress fires within seconds, leaving no residue behind. This means rapid fire control without costly clean-up or disruption, helping you protect both people and property with confidence.

Clean Agent Fire Suppression System

A clean agent fire suppression system is designed to extinguish fires without collateral damage. Instead of water or foam, it uses non-water-based, residue-free gases that are electrically non-conductive.

The result is fast, effective fire suppression that protects delicate equipment and enclosed environments. You gain immediate fire control while avoiding the long downtime and damage often associated with conventional suppression methods.

Types of Clean Agent Fire Suppression Systems

NOVEC™ 1230 (Fluorinated Ketone FK-5-1-12)

How It Works:

NOVEC™ 1230 suppresses fire primarily through physical heat absorption, stopping combustion almost immediately. It is electrically non-conductive and has minimal impact on oxygen levels, making it safe for occupied areas.

Key Applications:

NOVEC 1230 is ideal for areas where an electrically non-conductive and residue-free agent is essential, including:

Benefits:

ANSUL® FM-200™ (HFC-227ea) CLEAN AGENT FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

How It Works:

The system deploys FM-200, an odourless and colourless clean agent that works by vaporising and absorbing heat to extinguish flames. It is electrically non-conductive, making it safe for use with electronic equipment and delicate circuitry.

Key Applications:

The FM-200 system is commonly used in occupied spaces where asset protection and rapid suppression are critical, including:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best clean agent fire suppression system?

There is no single “best” clean agent system. TThe most suitable solution depends on your specific environment, occupancy requirements and asset value. A data centre, for example, may require a different approach from an archive or museum.

To determine the most appropriate system for your premises, we recommend a professional assessment by our team.

What is the difference between NOVEC 1230 and FM-200?

Both NOVEC 1230 and FM-200™ (HFC-227ea) are clean agent fire suppression chemicals that extinguish fires by absorbing heat. Although they serve a similar purpose, they differ in several important ways.

  • Environmental impact: NOVEC 1230 has an ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and an atmospheric lifetime of around five days, making it a more environmentally responsible choice. FM-200™ has a significantly higher GWP and remains in the atmosphere for many years.
  • Safety margin: NOVEC 1230 is effective at lower concentrations, offering a wider safety margin in occupied spaces. FM-200™ requires higher concentrations, which results in a narrower margin.
  • Storage: NOVEC 1230 is stored as a liquid and usually needs a larger storage footprint. FM-200 is stored as a compressed gas, which can reduce overall storage space requirements.

Can you breathe FM-200™?

Yes. FM-200™ (HFC-227ea) is approved for use in occupied spaces when discharged at its standard design concentration, usually around 7%. It does not significantly reduce oxygen levels, allowing occupants to exit safely during activation.

How long does a clean agent extinguisher last?

Clean agent extinguishers typically have a service life of 10 to 15 years, similar to other extinguisher types. Longevity depends on proper maintenance, including annual inspections and periodic hydrostatic testing carried out by qualified professionals.

How often should my clean agent suppression system be inspected?

Routine checks help ensure system readiness. A brief visual inspection should be carried out weekly to confirm accessibility, cylinder pressure and overall condition.

In addition, a certified fire protection specialist should conduct a comprehensive inspection every six months. This includes checks on cylinder pressure or weight, battery condition and room integrity. System components such as detectors, alarms and nozzles should also be tested annually.
